Gemini for Teens

Starting in November 2024, the Gemini App (gemini.google.com) is available for students aged 13 and older. Google has built a Gemini experience specifically for teens after consulting with child development and learning science experts and testing with youth advisory panels. Before enabling Gemini for your teen users, you should consider some important information.

Admin Configuration

To enable Gemini for your teen users, go to Generative AI > Gemini app in the Admin console.

  1. Under Service status, choose ON for the OUs or groups for which you want to enable Gemini.
  2. Under User access, checking Allow all users to access the Gemini app, regardless of license, allows users who do not have a Workspace for Education Standard or Plus license assigned to their account to access the Gemini app. If you do not check this option, these users will not be able to access the Gemini App. Users who do have a Standard or Plus license assigned to their account will be able to access the Gemini App regardless of this setting.

Note: The Gemini App is only available to users aged 13 and older. You must set Service status to OFF for OUs and/or groups containing users under the age of 13, per the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service.

To ensure that your teen users receive the correct Gemini experience, verify that your Age based access settings are correct. Go to Account > Account settings > Age based access settings. Review this setting for your OUs and/or groups and set them appropriately as under 18 or over 18.

How Gemini for Teens Differs from Regular Gemini

The teen experience in Gemini is different from the regular Gemini experience in several ways:

  • Teen users cannot create images with Gemini.
  • Depending on the prompt, responses are double-checked with a Google search to see if any conflicting or inaccurate information is returned, or sources that informed the responses are cited and linked at the end of the response.
  • Questions or prompts related to topics that might be considered dangerous, inappropriate, or illegal are replied to with advice on who to contact for help or visually denoted with an alert.

Data Privacy

For any user who accesses Gemini with a Google Workspace for Education account, regardless of license or edition, their interactions with Gemini:

  • Will not be reviewed by humans
  • Will not be used to improve Gemini or other generative AI models

Parental Consent

Gemini is a Core Service for users with Google Workspace for Education Standard and Plus licenses assigned to their accounts. For Workspace for Education Fundamentals, Gemini is an Additional Service. Like all Additional Services, Google requires schools to obtain parental consent before enabling Gemini for users under 18. Check your organization’s policies on obtaining consent for the Core Services of Google Workspace for Education.

Admin Reporting and Logs

Users’ activity in Gemini can be searched and exported in Google Vault. Please note that at this time:

  • Retention rules and holds for Gemini are not currently supported in Vault; Google indicates these features will be included in a future update.
  • Users who only have Workspace for Education Fundamentals can delete past chats from Gemini, which also deletes them from Vault.
  • Users with Workspace for Education Standard or Plus licenses assigned to their account cannot delete past chats from Gemini, meaning they will be visible in Vault.
