We have some fresh information from Google on Gemini for Teens (users aged 13+). This may require action on your part in preparation for this rollout. So below is what we know.
Google is sending Emails with additional information to domain primary admins, so check that Inbox for a message titled:
[Action Required] Gemini is launching to Google Workspace for Education teen users, you may need to re-enable it for some
When is this rollout happening?
Google officially announced this in the Workspace Updates Blog November 8, 2024.
How will this rollout work?
-
IMPORTANT: If you have Gemini enabled for OUs or groups with users under 18, Google will be disabling Gemini for your entire organization until you fix this. We urge you to disable Gemini for your under-18 OUs now. The best solution may be to disable Gemini at your top-level OU and enable it only for your staff OU or group.
Caution: Please be advised that Google may still disable Gemini for your organization as part of this rollout, so you may need to re-enable it for your over-18 users.
- When this rollout starts, Gemini will be an Additional Service, meaning you must get parental consent before enabling it for your teen users. Parental consent is required for Additional Services by the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service. Later this year, Gemini App (gemini.google.com) will become a Core Service for users with a Workspace for Education Standard or Plus license assigned to their account. Until then, the
- Workspace for Education Terms of Service will require Gemini's parental consent. The transition to a Core Service will occur through the end of 2024.
- You will need to enable Gemini by OU or group. This means you need to know which OUs or groups contain users aged 13 or older and use that to determine who gets access (this is similar to YouTube, for example).
What do I need to do now?
- Disable Gemini for your under-18 OUs and/or groups (Generative AI > Gemini)
- Monitor the status of Gemini access for your over-18 users in case Google disables it.
- Start gathering parental consent. Whether or not you are on Standard/Plus or Fundamentals, we recommend getting consent either way.
- Plan for how to enable this for your users aged 13+. This could be by a group or by OU, depending on your
- OU structure (7th grade may be tricky since, generally speaking, 7th graders are between 12 and 13)
We will post more information here as we get it and welcome your questions.
