What is Google Vids
Google Vids is a collaborative video creation app in Google Workspace for Education that makes it easy to create engaging instructional videos and inspire the next wave of storytellers. Using Vids, teachers and students can:
- Use video templates to help get started.
- Add their own content, including images and video clips from Drive.
- Add videos, GIFs, images, stickers, music, and sound effects from the Vids stock content library.
- Use a recording studio that lets users record audio, record themselves, record their screen, or a combination.
- Add scripts for recording voiceovers and use a teleprompter while recording themselves.
- Collaborate in real-time, like in Docs or Slides, and share videos by downloading them as an MP4 or sharing them with a link for playback view on a computer.
Who Can Access Vids?
Access to Vids is dependent on the license assigned to the user.
- Full access: Users with a Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium license assigned to their account
- Basic access: Users with a Workspace for Education Plus license assigned to their account

Vids is not available to users with personal Google accounts unless a Vids user invites them to collaborate on or view a Vids file.

FAQs
How do Google admins restrict or allow access to Vids?
Admins can manage Vids access in the Admin console by going to Apps > Google Workspace > Drive and Docs > Google Vids.
Is purchasing Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium required to be able to use Vids?
That depends on your edition of Workspace for Education.
- If you have Workspace for Education Plus: No, purchasing Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium is not required. Users with a Workspace for Education Plus license assigned to their account have basic access: they can create/edit their own content, but they will not have access to the Gemini features that enhance Vids. Please refer to Gemini enhancements available in Vids above to see which features users cannot use if they only have Plus.
-
If you do not have Workspace for Education Plus: Yes, you would need to purchase enough Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium licenses to support the number of users who wish to use Vids. But this would give these users full access to Vids and all available Gemini enhancements.
Note: Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium licenses are only available to users aged 18 and older.
Can users who have neither Workspace for Education Plus, Gemini Education nor Gemini Education Premium use Vids?
These users have limited access. They can view Vids files and collaborate in Vids files created by others and shared with them, but they cannot create their own files in Vids. If no one in your Workspace for Education domain has one of these licenses, then that means no one will be able to use Vids since no one can create any files to share with collaborators.
Is there a time limit on the videos users can create?
Yes, each video can be a maximum of 10 minutes to maximize viewer engagement. If users need to insert a portion of a longer video, they can insert videos from Drive (up to 30 minutes) into a scene and then trim them.
Does Google Vids support vertical video?
At this time, Vids is optimized for desktop, given that is where school users most often create and view educational videos and content today.
What languages does Google Vids support?
Currently, Vids is available in the user’s local language, but the Gemini features and templates are only available in English.
Will Vids be available via desktop and mobile?
At this time, Vids creation and editing are only available on desktop, but viewing is available on both desktop and mobile devices.
Can Vids upload directly to YouTube?
Not at this time. However, users can share Vids files publicly with a view link like any other Drive file. One benefit of using Vids is that when a file is changed, the most recent version of the file plays the next time someone views it. No publishing or exporting/downloading is required.
Note: This scenario differs from YouTube, which requires the original video to be deleted and replaced by a new upload changed after upload, resulting in lost viewership data, a new URL, and other inconveniences for updated videos.
Is Vids supported in Google Classroom?
Yes! Users can share Vids files in Classroom just like Docs, Slides, or Sheets files. This is great for keeping instructional videos private to your organization and off of YouTube. To learn more about using Vids as an educator, we highly recommend Google’s free Vids training course designed specifically for educators.
What Terms of Service cover Google Vids?
Google Vids is a core service covered by the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service.
