Understanding Asset Cache Synchronization in Gopher for Chrome Premium

If you've recently set up or made significant changes to your account, you may see a message that says, The asset cache is syncing. Devices will appear here once complete.

What Is The Asset Cache?

The Asset Cache is a secure, local copy of all the devices retrieved from your Google Workspace or other integrated services.

Why You Need It

We use the Asset Cache because it gives you key advantages:

  • Speed: A local copy allows the application to load your device lists, search results, and filters almost instantly. You won't have to wait for the system to query external servers every time.
  • Consistency: It ensures the device data you see across different areas of the application remains consistent.
  • Efficiency: It reduces the load on both your network and integrated APIs, creating a smoother experience for you and all users.

Why Is It Syncing?

Synchronization (Synching) is the process by which the system builds, updates, and verifies the local Asset Cache against live data in your organizational domain.

When Does It Happen?

The initial, full sync is typically triggered when you:

  • First Enable Domain-Wide Delegation (DWD): This is the most common reason for the initial sync, as the system imports all your device data for the very first time.
  • Restore or Reconfigure Major Services: Any significant system changes that affect your device data may trigger a full cache refresh.

What to Expect During the Initial Sync:

When you navigate to the Device Search page, a message and a loading spinner will appear instead of your device list. This message indicates that the system is actively working in the background.

  • Action Required: You don't need to refresh the page. The process runs automatically.
  • Completion: When the sync is 100% complete, the message will automatically disappear, and your device list will populate with the synchronized data. You can then immediately interact with the device search and filters.

Estimated Timeline for Completion

The number of managed devices in your domain determines the duration of the initial sync.

  • Up to 1,000 Devices: The sync should take about 5 to 15 minutes.
  • Up to 5,000 Devices: Expect the sync to complete within 15 to 45 minutes.
  • 5,000+ Devices: The sync may take anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours.

Remember, subsequent syncs are incremental and typically finish in seconds or minutes. If a delay significantly exceeds these estimates, please [contact our support team].
